Tool steels are different carbon steels or alloys that are appropriate for work tools. In the knife industry, tool steels are used for dynamically stressed knives, e.g. professional tools, outdoor, every day or tactical knives. They are suitable for fixed and foldable knives. This steel is often combined with a blasted blade finish, which gives the blade special appearance and also hardeners the surface. With special blade coatings, blades from tool steel become corrosion resistant and get an anti-reflective, matte appearance. Blades made from tool steel typically have a high level of hardness and firmness and are resistant to blade edge abrasion. In comparison with stainless steel, tool steel blades are much tougher. A lot of tool steels are due to relatively high vanadium and chrome content characterized as semi-stainless steels. Knives made of tool steels can be produced with different manufacturing processes, stamping, mechanical/metal cutting, forging or laser cutting. Heat treatment and quenching is definitely one of most important steps in the manufacturing process, and it has significant effects on knife properties.

  

AISI D2 TOOL STEEL KNIFE

Producers like Viper, Pohl Force, and LionSteel often use AISI D2 tool steel for blade manufacturing. AISI D2 steel consists of 12 % of chrome; therefore, it is corrosion resistant in everyday use without any coatings.

 

AISI M2 TOOL STEEL KNIFE

AISI M2 is mostly used for small series, custom-made knives. It is especially appropriate for fine blades with a thin edge.

 

CPM M4 TOOL STEEL KNIFE

Tool steel CPM M4 is also known as AISI M4 is tool steel produced with CPM – Crucible Particle Metallurgy production process. CPM M4 is categorized as a high speed tool steel and is used in the knife industry for high-end blades. For knife manufacturing, it is most often used by Spyderco.
