Pocket knives - GLASS-BREAKER - METAL KNIFE HANDLES

Pocket knives

Knife handles made of steel are firm, hard, robust and very durable; therefore, they are appropriate for tactical and outdoor knives, used in the most extreme conditions. Their disadvantage is that they are slippery when polished or with a satin finish. This can be substituted with ridges or indentations on the handle surface, e.g. Lion Steel with a metal handle. Due to high strength, metal handles can have an opening in the middle, which also contributes to a better grip, e.g. PUMA German Expedition Knife.

Knife handles can be made of different steels and can have a satin, polish or coated surface. When steel is used for handles, it is usually the same type as the blade. They are very appropriate for tactical and outdoor use and in conditions where ultimate robustness and durability is needed.  Extreme temperatures, mud, swamps and other unpleasant conditions are all well manageable with a steel handle, e.g. Pohl Force metal handle. Steel is, however, a bad insulator; therefore, gloves are recommended at low temperatures. Steel handles are also very appropriate for kitchen knives, as they do not have any pores, are easy to clean, and thus very hygienic. For this reason, Al Mar, Wüsthof and WMF use these types of handles often.

Aluminum handles are very lightweight and can have a ridged surface that enables good grip. This is due to easy mechanical treatment of aluminum.  Most of the knives with an aluminum handle are intended for outdoor use, like CRKT aluminum handle knives and rescue knives from the Eickhorn aluminum handle series.

Knife handles made of titanium are lightweight and firm. American manufacturer Spyderco uses it for foldable knife handles and some other manufacturers on their prestige knives.
